Our Accomplishments

  • Assisted 10 parks in becoming new International Dark Sky Parks, since 2013.
  • Assisted 3 communities in becoming new International Dark Sky Communities.
  • Trained guides and outfitters, which engages 40,000-50,000 outdoor trip participants annually.
  • Co-organized Dark Skies and Emerging Technologies Conference in Flagstaff.
  • Developed suggested Best Management Practices (BMPs) for the Moab Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Office, to reduce light pollution from energy development on public lands.
  • Created lighting BMPs to be included in BLM Master Leasing Plans and shared with energy developers.
  • Assisted 17 communities with lighting ordinances and night skies civic engagement.
  • Provided technical assistance and researched funding options for lighting retrofits in 8 national and state parks.
  • Hosted educational and outreach events in schools, communities, parks, and planetariums.
  • Participated in 150+ online, print, and TV media stories.
  • Worked with Utah Office of Tourism to create ‘Dark Sky Parks’ tourism campaign.
  • Delivered presentations at community meetings, astronomy events, and professional conferences.
  • Provided astronomy training to National Park Service (NPS) and Utah State Parks interpretive staff.
  • Co-organized night sky outreach presentations, materials, and activities for the NPS’s Utah Centennial Gala.
